From Safety to Sustainability: The Next Cultural Transformation in Business

Twenty years ago, safety was often viewed as a compliance function. Today, the organisations that perform best understand that safety is part of their culture, influencing every decision, every employee and every part of the business. Sustainability is now at the same crossroads.

While many organisations have sustainability strategies and specialists, real progress will only come when responsible business practices become embedded into everyday thinking, from design and procurement to operations and customer delivery. After all, around 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined at the design stage, making everyday decisions critical to reducing waste, improving efficiency, supporting circularity and creating positive outcomes for people, communities and nature.

This session explores how the lessons learned from decades of building strong safety cultures can help organisations embed sustainability in the same way. It will demonstrate why sustainability is no longer just about compliance or reporting, but a driver of competitive advantage, operational excellence, innovation, resilience and long-term business success.

Attendees will leave with practical ideas for helping their organisations make the transition from sustainability as a function to sustainability as part of the culture.

Driver Safety Awareness Session in partnership with Police Scotland.

This powerful session shares the real-life circumstances surrounding a serious road traffic accident, the impact it had, and the important lessons that can be taken from it. Police Scotland have delivered similar sessions with organisations including Scottish Power, where the feedback has been very positive and thought-provoking.

The session is designed to encourage reflection on how quickly everyday journeys can change, and how the choices we make behind the wheel can affect not only ourselves, but our families, colleagues, and wider communities. Road safety can often feel familiar or routine, but sessions like this remind us why staying alert, responsible and mindful on the road matters so much.

Alongside sharing his experience, the speaker will also provide general advice and guidance on employers’ responsibilities when it comes to supporting safe driving at work, offering practical points for organisations to consider in helping manage work-related road risk and promote a strong culture of driver safety.

It is a chance to hear a real story, gain practical perspective, better understand both individual and employer responsibilities, and reinforce habits and approaches that could help prevent future incidents.
